Hanging on by a thread

While it’s rumoured the Government may be preparing to reduce planned rises to business rates, Bath’s MP Wera Hobhouse, has said it is “absolutely urgent” for Ministers to provide clarity to pubs, hospitality and high street businesses.

Mrs Hobhouse has warned that many of Bath’s high street businesses are already hanging on by a thread, and that this change to business rates could represent the final opportunity for the Government to prevent further closures.

The Liberal Democrats are also urging the Government to introduce an emergency VAT cut for hospitality, arguing it would give high streets an immediate boost while easing pressure on both businesses and local families.

Mrs Hobhouse has been consistently campaigning on behalf of Bath’s hospitality sector, speaking out for pubs, restaurants and hotels across the city that are being squeezed by rising costs.

Over the past year, she has met with local businesses, including Green Park Brasserie & Bath Pizza Co and the Queensberry Hotel, whose owners have warned that fewer customers, soaring energy bills and the Chancellor’s jobs tax are making it increasingly difficult to keep their doors open.

Alex Peters, Director at popular city centre eateries Green Park Brasserie and the Bath Pizza Co, told the Bath MP that the current climate is “stifling growth” and “biting the hand that feeds” the economy. Mrs Hobhouse has repeatedly raised these concerns in Parliament, backed LibDem calls for an emergency 5% VAT cut for hospitality, and warned that without swift action on business rates, Bath’s much-loved pubs, cafes and restaurants could be pushed beyond breaking point.

Amidst continued uncertainty, Mrs Hobhouse says time is rapidly running out for businesses already pushed to the brink.

Wera Hobhouse, Liberal Democrat MP for Bath, said:

“This is the last call for our hospitality sector. From the cruel jobs tax to high energy bills, so many pubs and bars in Bath are on their last legs and need support.

“These businesses are naturally worried sick. The Government must respond by U-turning today and announcing support for all hospitality venues, including a VAT cut to boost our high streets.

“This is a pivotal moment for ministers, and it is absolutely urgent that they provide the clarity that the sector needs. It is their final and only chance.”
