With October 1st launching Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the Mayor of Bath, Councillor Ruth Malloy, has been to visit a local peer support group for people living with incurable secondary (metastatic) breast cancer.
Make 2nds Count is a UK-wide patient and family-focused charity dedicated to giving hope to people living with secondary breast cancer. One of the ways it does this is through its monthly Tea & Chat peer support groups.
The Mayor thanked the charity for inviting her to their monthly Tea & Chat at The Bear Inn in Bath, saying: “I felt both honoured and humbled to spend time with the group, to hear all the personal stories of living with secondary breast cancer, and to experience the support the members of the group offer one another. Thank you for making me feel so welcome.”
Sam Dixon, Chief Executive of Make 2nds Count, added: “We were delighted that the Mayor of Bath chose to visit our Tea & Chat group in Bath. Our groups bring people living with secondary (metastatic) breast cancer together to share experiences, knowledge and friendship. They offer a safe, welcoming space where people can feel understood, supported and less alone – an integral part of our support programme.
“This Breast Cancer Awareness Month, our My Life, My Way campaign gives our community the opportunity to define what living well means to them. We want to challenge assumptions, increase understanding and show that there is no single way to navigate life with this disease.
“We’re incredibly grateful to our Community Ambassadors, Carol and Sue, who host our Bath Tea & Chat group and provide this vital lifeline of support for people living with secondary breast cancer in the area, and to The Bear Inn, who very generously sponsored refreshments on the day of the Mayoral visit.”
Joe from The Bear Inn at Wellsway in Bath said: “As a community-driven pub, we’re extremely proud to be the venue for this vital support group every month. We were delighted to provide the refreshments on this occasion for the Madam Mayor (Ruth Malloy)’s visit, as part of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
“It’s a wonderful thing to host M2C in our pub, and we plan to continue supporting the charity however we can.”
