Rubbish!

Is it just me? Why do I bother to get annoyed about the look of the Guildhall?

I regard it as Bath’s City Hall and am well aware that the central bit – ignoring the 19th-century add-ons – is a Grade 1 listed 18th-century building of note.

Collect your bags, folks.

So why are refuse sacks from other enterprises left hanging from its railings every day?

We don’t have a court sitting inside. They are bewigged actors from another production using the Guildhall for filming.

Just recently, someone filled in the cracks between the stone steps leading up to its entrance doors, but no attempt has been made to renew the white stripes at the edge of each tread.

It’s all about first impressions, and this does not look good.

The High Street

Meanwhile, across the High Street, the remnants of a food waste collection litter the pavement.

Approaching Cleveland Bridge

I know there are several refuse companies employed in waste collection, and I have no idea of the time of day they carry out their duties, but I came across one pile of waste near the London Road, which I know is not going to be collected for several days.

Walcot Street

Here’s another sorry mess in Walcot Street.

It’s not enough to wow our visitors with the Roman and Georgian set pieces when the very pavements they tread to reach them are a disgrace.

  1. A quick sift through the bags would reveal which thoughtless short-sighted businesses put the stuff out. One would then be justified to chuck it all back through their doors. It would give them something to do in their silly here today gone tomorrow dilletante boutiques. (Hereby ends my rant!)

  2. Just returned from a trip in Spain which included Madrid and Seville. We were cycling for part of our trip. Saw one pothole in two weeks. Street cleaners and refuse collectors on the go the whole time. Everywhere was tidy, clean and waste being managed, pavements being cleaned. It’s so sad that Bath looks so dirty and unloved.

  3. I agree. The rubbish (not helped by the seagulls) is a blight on the city. I cannot but feel that Bath is being outshone by more and more locations (recent places that I have visited and come to mind being Dresden and Prague). This is not due to the inherent beauty of the buildings but rather by the care with which the wider city scape is maintained.
