Pub talk

The historic Devonshire Arms pub is the venue for the next meeting of the Odd Down History group, who are hosting an evening social on Tuesday, 23rd June at 6 pm for anyone who is interested in social history and sitting and having nostalgic chats with like-minded people.

You are invited to come along with friends or on your own; you are promised a friendly welcome and the opportunity to meet people.

The Devonshire Arms, or the Devy as it is affectionately known by locals, has sat perched on the corner of Wellsway, opposite St Luke’s church, for nearly 200 years.

First recorded in 1841. According to census returns from 1871 to 1918, various members of the Rawlings family lived at this public house. It would have been during the time that the workhouse at Odd Down was active, and of course, throughout World War I.

There have been various other occupiers, and you may remember going there in your youth or playing skittles there.

The Devonshire Arms reopened in May after having a refurbishment, and the new managers are looking forward to getting to know the community.

Come along, buy a drink and join Odd Down History Group’s evening social (which are often requested at monthly daytime meetings), share your stories and listen to others. All are welcome.

The group meet on the third Thursday of the month at Odd Down Sports Ground Cafe at 2 pm.
