Walking with benefits

The much-loved RUHX Walk of Life marked its 20th anniversary in style by bringing together hundreds of supporters to celebrate two decades of community spirit and fundraising for the Royal United Hospitals Bath (RUH).

On Saturday 23 May, 280 walkers took to the scenic Kennet & Avon Canal, challenging themselves to 26.2 miles, 16 miles or 10 miles from Bishops Cannings near Devizes or Bradford on Avon. Walkers crossed the finish line at the iconic Holburne Museum in Bath, cheered on by friends, family and supporters.

Many more people joined the celebration in their own way from home throughout May, ensuring the spirit of the Walk of Life was felt throughout Bath, Wiltshire and beyond.

Together, participants have raised an incredible £56,000 and counting to support extra extraordinary care at the RUH Bath, helping to enhance patient experience and provide vital equipment and services beyond NHS funding.

The Walk of Life began in 2006, thanks to sisters Nicola and Vanessa, who were both determined to raise funds to improve cancer facilities at the RUH. It has since grown into RUHX’s largest event and, over the past 20 years, has raised more than £900,000 for the hospital.

RUHX Events and Community Manager, Ellie Wilkinson-Brown, says:

“We’d like to say a huge thank you to everyone who took part, especially on such a warm and sunny day! We are incredibly grateful for the support of local organisations, businesses, volunteers, our wonderful walkers, and everyone who supported and donated. We’d also like to thank Savills and SPF for kindly sponsoring the event.

The Walk of Life is a very special event for the charity, and it has and continues to make a huge difference to generations of patients. The incredible donations raised at the Walk of Life mean that we can ensure every patient at the RUH receives extra extraordinary care, whether by funding new state-of-the-art equipment like our surgical robot that improves outcomes and recovery times for patients, improving facilities or providing services such as music on the hospital wards.”
