Over to you

Nick Sommer writes:

“When entering Northumberland Place this morning, I was disgusted at the level of fouling by birds, principally Gulls, on the pavement.

What is the solution?

Bath’s city centre is blighted all over with this type of mess. I don’t suppose Banes has the money to clean everywhere, so what resources they have are concentrated on the Southgate area.

These deposits cause the pavements to be quite slippery when light rain falls on them. I thought you might like to put it out there for comment.”

While we’re on the subject of Northumberland Place, Nick, I see the plant trough donated by Cllr June Player is still in a mess.

  1. Such a shame, it seems to be a permanent problem & looks awful. Hopefully something can be done, it is a lovely passageway

  2. I’ve lived for many years in Holland where most shopkeepers, never mind householders, keep the street outside clean and tidy – simply taking pride in their surroundings. It can be as simple as when they’ve finished mopping the floor indoors they chuck the water onto the street – best done early late in the day. Simples!

  3. Fully agree with Sue. Went into central Bath for first time in a while this week & was equally as disgusted and disappointed to see all the mess from seagulls, all over the pavements & on walls of historic buildings.
It’s a germful health hazard, extremely unsightly & lets down the standards expected of a World Heritage City.

Not to mention the 2 tourists who were shat on by low flying seagulls. They were aghast.

The cost of clean-up must be huge (to local Council Tax payers). Could the Council disclose this please?
When are they going to tackle the root cause… seagulls?

  4. I agree with Maeve – it is easy to look to the Council to do the clean up but if the shopkeepers took more responsibility (with little extra effort) the city would look a lot cleaner.
