‘Royal’ Speedway?

What’s this I am hearing from local residents about Royal Avenue being used at week-ends for ‘drag’ racing?

It’s a highway through Royal Victoria Park with no doubt accelerator-tempting straight bits for those who want cheap midnight thrills when locals would rather not hear their engines revving.

I am told the police say they cannot do anything unless these boy – and maybe girl – racers are caught in the act.

I wouldn’t want to stand in the middle of the road to stop them!

  1. Bathwick Hill is also suffering from Speed Racing, last Sunday evening two cars were racing up the hill at speeds in excess of 60mph. Madness two up market cars at that.

  2. Actually, you have hit upon the answer ie. stand some bollards in the middle of the road. Total cost, £5,000? Problem solved and route made permanently safer as part of the Bath Walking, Wheeling and Cycling Links project.

There is no decent justification to allow drivers to cut through our parks.

(nb. make some bollards lockable so can still cater for events eg. Christmas Market)

  3. 100% – I live on the Avenue and it is only a matter of time before somebody is seriously hurt. Drag racing at night and speeding by virtually every car by day. Like you say, I think the tempting straight line, with no speed barriers to slow anyone down. I’ve complained twice to the council and get zero by way of response. So easy to fix.
