For those who still do not know it, Bath Record Office is based in the Guildhall basement.

It holds an amazing collection of historical documents which touch on almost every aspect of life in the city and are available to those involved in historical research.

It’s good to see that a new display case has been put at the top of the stairs leading down to the archive and study centre. It gives a flavour of the riches that lie below.

The first ‘taster’ features the Wessex Water Collection and Bath City Waterworks and displays items that represent the collection.

Great idea, but for me it’s a shame this case could not be positioned in the main foyer of the Guildhall, as it’s only going to be seen by those already committed to going down the stairs into the Record Office
Agree – this facility should be better known by the people of Bath – but your good work is helping.
It’s a brilliant resource for looking up the history of your house. We used to live at no 31 Rivers Street which once was the Red House Bakery, the ghost sign is still on the side wall above the small house next door. Records went back to 1760 when the house was built.
We did look elsewhere, but there were safety, security and lighting concerns (as in too much sunlight) elsewhere.
We’re hoping it will be of interest to all visitors to the Guildhall, not just ours.
