Popped into the MA Degree Show at the Locksbrook Campus of Bath Spa University yesterday to be confronted with a whole load of empty masking tape rolls.

It’s the material Philip Ringland has used to clad his installation of sculptural forms, which were on display just inside the main entrance.

Philip, who hails from Badminton, has a website which best describes his work.

“Inspired by architecture and literature, and informed by music, philosophy and politics, Wrapped offers a manifestation of Philip’s playful personality as well as an expression of his surreal and abstract outlook on the world.

Bringing together discarded objects which have either been rescued from skips or found in the street and marrying them with his own family artefacts and items found in the free ads or car boot sales, Philip has created an installation of sculptural forms where the arduous task of covering them all with masking tape has provided them with a new shared existence and revealed new forms where any sense of hierarchy has been removed.”

His postgraduate studies have fitted around his full-time job as a magician. Well, he’s certainly pulled one out of the hat!

Lots of other work to see, and just today and tomorrow to view.

There is no entry fee.

Public View: 6–10 September (10 am–6 pm)* open to all.
