A by-election has been called in the Widcombe and Lyncombe district of Bath following the decision by Lib Dem Councillor Deborah Collins to step down and concentrate on her health after being diagnosed with cancer.

Ms Collins issued a statement saying: “I’m very grateful for the screening programme and the excellent care at the RUH, which I’m confident will lead to my full recovery from cancer.

Sadly, I am a long way from being back to normal and able to deal with the demands of being a councillor, so I have had to take the decision to stand down early and focus on my health.”

The council by-election will be held on Thursday, October 9th, and anyone planning to stand will need to get their application papers in to the returning officer at the Guildhall by 4 pm on Friday, September 12th.

Ms Collins has been one of two Liberal Democrat councillors for the ward since the local elections in May 2023.

Both she and Cllr Alison Born had big majorities.
