The Lib Dem party conference kicked off in Brighton yesterday with our Bath MP, Wera Hobhouse saying that saving the NHS and fixing social care will be the party’s top priority in the new Parliament.
The party achieved a record-breaking election result in the summer, with 72 MPs elected across England, Scotland and Wales. They say they have regained their status as the country’s third party and will use their new parliamentary strength to call for urgent measures to tackle the NHS crisis and improve social care.
In the opening speech of the party’s conference in Brighton, Wendy Chamberlain MP, Chief Whip, declared the Liberal Democrats as “the party of the NHS and care in every part of Britain”, criticising the Conservative government’s failure to protect health services.
Mrs Hobhouse has long been a champion for local health services. She regularly meets with Bath based organisations in the sector, such as the RUH, RICE and the Royal Osteoporosis Society. In Parliament, the Bath MP works to highlight constituent experiences with health services, raising the need to combat long waiting times for ambulances, GP and dentist appointments in the Chamber.
Wera Hobhouse will continue to advocate for fixing the NHS and delivering a fair deal for Bath in the new Parliament.
She said:
“Fixing our NHS and social care system is an issue that comes up time and time again right across Bath.
“The out-of-touch Conservative Party allowed hospitals to crumble and waiting lists to soar – they can never be trusted with the NHS again.
“Alongside my Liberal Democrat colleagues, I’ll be pushing the new Government day and night to fix the NHS, for too long we’ve let our health services decline and that needs to change.”
