I see Dan Norris, our Regional Mayor, has been selected to fight the North East Somerset and Hanham seat for Labour at the next general election. Mr Norris was the former MP for the area between 1997 and 2010.
He will be up against the sitting Conservative MP, Sir Jacob Rees-Mogg – and the current Mayor of Bath, Cllr Dine Romero who has been selected by the Liberal-Democrats.
Mr Norris, who is from a Somerset coal mining family, has lived locally all his life. Originally an NSPCC trained child protection officer he became an MP in the last Labour Government and an environment minister. In 2021 he was elected as Mayor of the West of England unseating the sitting Conservative. He is a long standing animal welfare advocate and is Chair of the League Against Cruel Sports.
Dan Norris said: “I am delighted and proud to have been selected as the Labour candidate. This is my home and I’m passionate about making it the best it can be.
North East Somerset and Hanham is a highly marginal seat and it’s one where only Labour can beat the Conservatives. After fourteen years of the Conservatives, more and more people tell me they want to turn the page.”
Just hope the two mayors can come to an agreement otherwise Mogg could slip though the middle.
