Bath to stage a ‘Funeral for Nature’ – UPDATE

Remember these incredible images? Members of the Red Rebels Brigade who appeared during the biggest ‘Climate Strike’ demonstration ever held in Bath – back in September 2019.

Well, you are going to see this international performance artivist troupe (“dedicated to illuminating the global environmental crisis and supporting groups and organisations fighting to save humanity and all species from mass extinction”) back in the city this April.

And, this time around, you can join them as part of a huge ‘mock-funeral for nature’ procession through Bath. It’s aimed at raising awareness and pleading for action – especially here in the UK – which is now one of the most nature-depleted countries on earth.

UPDATE: While it’s hoped as many as possible will be willing to dress as Red Rebels – other people can follow as ‘mourners’ – if they come dressed in black!

The event is just appearing on social media. It’s web address is coderedfornature.uk and, on its platform, you will read: ‘If you care about nature and want to be involved in something really special but are not already a Red Rebel, then you and your family can become one for the day!

If you register early we may be able to provide you with the amazing outfit, depending on availability. Or do you have a bass drum and want to be a drummer? We also want as many drummers as possible.’

I met up at Rosario’s Cafe in Northumberland Place with organiser Rob Delius. He’s a local architect – already known for his involvement in the Sinking House project where a large sculpture of a red house was half-submerged in Pulteney Weir in the lead up to COP26 – communicating the urgent need for climate action.

Now he wants to help raise the profile of the threat to our own natural world.

As noted above – since this interview was recorded – you can join in as ‘mourners’ if you come dressed in black.
