It’s a problem of flow

No way through to the canal towpath from Grosvenor Bridge this morning as the River Avon has come over its banks and flooded the low-lying woodland.

More importantly, l am hearing that the river is flowing so fast that the ancient hot spring that feeds the Roman Baths cannot flow into it.

Instead, l hear the spring is being allowed to flow into parts of the complex that are normally dry and that, luckily, the Great Bath was at a lower level than normal after cleaning.

How long this back-up will last, l don’t know, and river levels are continuing to rise.

I am trying to get confirmation of this issue – or otherwise – from B&NES.

The latest online information from the Environment Agency for this area is as follows:

‘River levels are rising rapidly on the Bristol Avon due to heavy rainfall.

Areas most at risk include Bathampton Bridge and Sports Fields to riverside properties at Twerton and Locksbrook, including Pulteney Weir and nearby Sports Centre and Cricket Ground..

We will continue to monitor levels closely.

Consider activating any property flood protection products.

Avoid using low lying footpaths and any bridges near local watercourses and do not attempt to walk or drive through flood water.

PS l am reminded the Roman Baths flooded in 1960.
