Putting the soul into Southgate. That’s how the manager of Southgate Shopping Centre, Guy Henderson, described today’s official unveiling of an historical plaque – alongside the Urban Outfitter’s store near the middle of his retail space.

It’s the end of a ten year project a former Mayor of the city set himself. Bryan Chalker – former councillor and heritage champion – wanted something done to honour the memory of Bath-born Winnie Troutt who – until her death in 1984 – was the oldest survivor of the sinking of the Titanic in 1912.
Now the plaque tells her story and adds another point of interest to Southgate. I asked Brian how he felt now his task was complete.
