A 21st century pleasure garden for all the community. That’s what Keith Rowe – Project Manager for the Sydney Gardens restoration and improvement scheme – promised today in an interview with Bath Newseum.
The project recently successful bid for a major Heritage Lottery Fund grant to start work on regenerating one of the city’s most popular green ‘lungs’ and l was keen to find out where the money would be spent and what exactly happens next.
With regard to the bridges that cross the Kennet and Avon Canal – which also cuts through the park – Keith told me:
‘The two footbridges over the canal are Grade II* and are an attractive feature of both the Gardens and the Canal.
They enable views along the canal and across the wider townscape. No major conservation work is required, except a new coat of paint.
With the help of the Canal & River Trust volunteers, we will be rubbing the ironwork down, making any repairs needed (through the use of an iron specialist) and then repainting them.’
