Second attempt at bridge push postponed. Is bridge ‘dip’ an issue?

A second attempt to slide the new ‘Destructor Bridge’ across the River Avon at Bath Riverside has been postponed. I’m hearing it could be until the autumn!

So close and yet so far.

The following statement has been released:

‘The launch of the new Destructor Bridge has been deferred by Britannia Construction to allow further work to be carried out on the bridge alignment.

We can confirm that the BANES recycling centre on Upper Bristol Road will remain open this weekend, Friday 10th June to Sunday 12th June. Similarly, the river will also remain open, however the towpath will remain closed.P1000031

We apologise for any inconvenience and will continue to keep the public and stakeholders informed. ‘

Elsewhere l am picking up a point of view that the issue might be more to do with ‘inclination’ rather than ‘deviation’. The fact that the bridge rig is dipping too much as the whole thing is inched out across the river.

The contractors have a ‘model’ they can go away and run again to see what adjustments are necessary. Maybe – just maybe – the matter could be sorted and the bridge moved within days.

Whether it’s this weekend or one to come – they have to get it right before the structure plays out to a point of not return – or worse – suffers any collapse of its supports.
