A Very Mary Berry Christmas!

For those who don’t yet know Bath’s very own ‘Queen of Cakes’ Mary Berry will be doing the honours at this years switch-on of Bath’s Christmas Lights.

It’s all happening at the town end of Milsom Street around 5.30 next Tuesday evening – November 12th.

The official switching on ceremony gets underway at 6.15 before which l hear Mary will be taking tea, or something a little stronger, with the Mayor in his Guildhall Parlour during an official Civic Reception.

Not sure if any Victoria Sponge will be offered or whether Mary might be asked to ‘bless’ a Bath Bun or Sally Lunn!

Television watchers will know this elegant lady – a prolific writer of successful cook books and an Aga aficionado –  as a co-judge – with Paul Hollywood – on BBC 2’s The Great British Bake Off series- which was filmed in Somerset.

She has just released her autobiography Recipe for Life and talked about growing up in Bath when l met her at the Royal Crescent Hotel with Bath On TV   www.bathontv.co.uk/my-bath-life-with-mary-berry/

I hear rumours that Bath may be planning something a little grander for Mary – long-term – than just pressing a button.

Up to now there is only one Bath-born female who has been awarded the Freedom of the City and that was ‘Ice Queen’ Amy Williams who brought back a Gold Medal from the Winter Olympics in 2010.

Time for another some think. Well it’s the city’s Charter Trustees who decide such things and l have a feeling the matter has been discussed – in some quarters at least. I will let you know if l hear anything more definite.
