Back in July work began on Bath Abbey‘s North aisle floor trial. This work is necessary to stabilize the subsiding floor, and to test the new geo-thermal heating system which, it is hoped, will use energy from the Roman Baths hot water.
To do this the pews were temporarily lifted, which opened up a unique opportunity to record memorial inscriptions hidden for over 140 years.
If the Abbey is successful in getting grant money from the Heritage Lottery Fund the rest of the floor space will be taken up and the remaining pockets of subsidence dealt with in the same way.
It means the ledger recording team of volunteers will be kept very busy for a very long time!
I have been talking to the Abbey archivist, Dr Lucy Rutherford.
