Daily abuse from passers-by, vandalism and theft. That is what I was told was the experience faced by contractors working on the installation of a new cycleway and street lighting through Royal Victoria Park.

The scheme has upset many people. An online petition asking B&NES to pause and reconsider the whole thing has so far attracted over four thousand signatures.

It’s been organised by David Dixon – himself a former councillor and deputy leader of the Liberal-Democrat administration.

He is due to meet with the current leader, Cllr Kevin Guy, and other members of his administration next Thursday. I met him in the park this morning.
Meanwhile, while I was there, members of the council’s press office arrived to meet up with Cllr Lucy Hodge, who is the cabinet member responsible for highways and the works underway around the city.

She was due to make a video addressing the issues raised by protestors.
I have emailed the press office for a statement on the situation.
