Ancient landscape, reimagined.

First day of a new month and a busy morning.

I walked into town to chat with two leading members of the Friends of Sydney Gardens, then went to the nearby Holburne Museum to learn more about the new top gallery exhibition opening on Saturday.

It’s called ‘Ancient Landscape, Modern Times’ and brings together works by Eric Revillous, William Nicholson, Paul and John Nash, Tirzah Garwood, Peggy Angus and other British artists from the 1910s to the 1940s.

Through examples of their work, the exhibition reveals how the stark forms of the South Downs and related chalk landscapes inspired a generation of artists seeking to reinvent painting for the modern age.

The exhibition has been developed by writer and curator James Russell, who is widely recognised as the leading authority on Eric Ravilious and his circle.

See holburne.org for more information about this and other exhibitions.
