Congratulations to the volunteers who look after one of Bath’s hidden historic gems.
Bath Jewish Burial Ground has been named the South West winner of the inaugural Everyday History Heroes awards, created by Findmypast and Heritage Open Days to celebrate organisations and communities bringing the stories of ordinary people to life.
The award recognises the work of the Friends of Bath Jewish Burial Ground, whose volunteers have restored and cared for this remarkable site while uncovering the stories of the Jewish families, tradespeople, and professionals who lived and worked in Bath.
The Friends would like to thank everyone who voted for them and supported their nomination.
The timing could hardly be better, as the Burial Ground will be open to visitors this Sunday, 13 September, from 10 am to 4 pm. Entry is free and no booking is required.
There is another reason to visit Combe Down this weekend. The Burial Ground’s former quarry workers’ cottage is also taking part in the Combe Down Art Trail, with textile artist Lucy Poloniecka exhibiting her work in the cottage.
So, if you haven’t yet discovered this fascinating and unusual part of Bath’s heritage, Sunday is a particularly good time to visit — and to celebrate with the Friends their success as South West Everyday History Heroes.
