Bath’s blessed with nearly as many museums as coffee shops, but l spent time yesterday visiting one which is a little out of the way.
A modest little terraced Georgian townhouse from which astronomer William Herschel just happened to spot a new planet while out in the garden and surveying the heavens through his homemade telescope!
Owned by Bath Preservation Trust and run as the Herschel Museum of Astronomy, it would seem the Trust has big plans for number 19 New King Street. More about that coming up.
Plus a chat with Grace Weir an Irish Contemporary Artist hosting a solo exhibition in the house which asks visitors to reflect on the history of astronomy and the nature of space and time through the lens of contemporary art.
Then, to top it all, another special exhibition featuring not William Herschel but his son John. It celebrates his pioneering contribution to the birth of photography. He’s actually the man who gave that process its name! Three stars indeed!
