Green light for market

One of Bath’s most popular winter events, which boosts the local economy by up to £64m each year and attracts more than 440,000 visitors, has been given permanent planning permission.

The award-winning Bath Christmas Market is one of the leading festive markets in the UK and Europe and can now operate annually for up to 25 days each year across a larger footprint.

However, Bath & North East Somerset Council has no current plans for immediate expansion or to extend the event from its current 18-day duration.

The possible new uses of the larger area of the city the market can occupy could include dining, entertainment, family activities and new retail opportunities to support local trade.

The planning consent will give the many local businesses, charities, food and drink outlets and hospitality venues that depend on its annual trade the certainty that they can benefit from the market’s economic value each year.

Sixty-five per cent of traders at Bath Christmas Market are from the Bath area, and 85% are from the South West.

Seventy-one per cent of visitors also spend money in Bath’s shops, cafés, restaurants and attractions, while many stay overnight, supporting businesses during the quieter winter months. Some 91% of staying visitors say they would consider returning to Bath at another time of year.

Bath Christmas Market has been part of Bath’s festive calendar for more than 25 years and was taken in-house by the council in 2022.

“This decision secures the future of this hugely popular, internationally recognised event and ensures it can continue to evolve responsibly and sustainably in the years ahead – which we’ll continue to do in consultation with residents, businesses and stakeholders.”
