Under a relentless sun

As another ultra-hot day dawns l want to make a special mention of all those who earn their living out in the open.

It cannot be much fun to build scaffolding or houses, work on the land, deliver post or pick up our refuse under a relentless sun.

I can only imagine that people would make the job of those who collect their rubbish easier if they actually presented items for collection in proper bags, properly separated.

Time after time l see this rubbish strewn across the pavement on the High Street.

While the cheek of someone putting a bag out full of every sort of rubbish and expecting it to be collected.

Quite rightly, it has been left with a notice. I think it should be a fine.

Meanwhile, my husband was out with friends last night in the hope of enjoying a meal.

While the food was fine, the service was lousy. Asking why the delay, he was told there was a shortage of staff because people were not prepared to work in such heat without air conditioning.

Just a final thought. How soon will umbrella sellers be stocking UV-protection umbrellas alongside the standard waterproof variety? I see lots already for sale on Amazon.

  1. True. This week was the first time ever I turned down work on the basis of the heat. It involved some moving of 20kg sandbags by hand, and I had to say to the agent… I just can’t do that in this heat (and I am only 44!). People still scoff at farmers, excavator drivers etc for wanting A/C… a tractor or digger is like a tiny greenhouse. I am asking about A/C before I take the job now. But the guys working on the ground at even 11am… it is not sustainable. But most of us are zero hours, no contract. We can say we are not happy to work… and the employers will just say “no work, no pay”. Council employees rightly get better treatment. Construction is the Wild West.
