Some of the biggest names in art are on display in Bath this summer.
You’ll find them featured on the gallery walls at the Holburne Museum’s hit exhibition Beyond Impressionism: Printmaking from Manet to Picasso.
Featuring works by Pablo Picasso, Vincent van Gogh, Édouard Manet, Pierre Bonnard, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Paul Cézanne, Berthe Morisot and many more, the exhibition offers a rare chance to experience works by some of the world’s most celebrated artists without having to leave the South West.
Spanning the mid-19th century through to the 1930s, Beyond Impressionism explores how the artists best known for their iconic paintings also transformed the art of printmaking. Through striking etchings, lithographs and woodblock prints, visitors can discover a different side to these famous names and see how they experimented with new techniques, subjects and styles.
Highlights include Manet’s portrait of fellow artist Berthe Morisot, Toulouse-Lautrec’s famous Moulin Rouge posters, Van Gogh’s peaceful Gardener by an Apple Tree, rare woodblock prints by Paul Gauguin, and works by Picasso that showcase his extraordinary creativity beyond painting.
The exhibition also reveals how artists captured everything from the energy of Parisian nightlife to quiet moments of family life and the beauty of the countryside. Alongside European masterpieces, visitors will see Japanese prints by Utagawa Hiroshige, whose work inspired many of the Impressionists and Post-Impressionists.
