Buckets and bells

The leak in the tower roof at Bath Abbey was so bad that they had to place buckets below the bells in the belfry.

Fixing that issue is the main reason you have seen so much scaffolding on the side of this historic church in recent weeks.

That and letting the skills of the stonemason replace any areas of the tower fabric that warranted attention.

All, of course, with the same material used to build this ancient place of worship – Bath stone.

I went along to meet the man who has been supervising the repair work. He’s Antony Feltham King – a man who took up his role as architect to the Abbey just three years ago.

I was offered a place in the temporary lift installed within the scaffolding on the north side of the church, but declined.

I don’t mind heights when I can’t see them, so a steady plod up an internal spiral staircase beckoned instead.
