Beethoven and ballet

[Red, white and blue!]

A weekend of culture for me.

It began with a pew seat at St Mary’s Church, Bathwick – courtesy of friend Bill – to listen to American pianist Richard Goode. He’s particularly renowned for his performances of Beethoven, and we were treated to a programme that offered three of the composer’s very greatest works.

Beautifully played and great church acoustics! Though long-term pew sitting did remind me of days gone by when we were regulars for concerts at Buckfast Abbey in Devon. There, you were advised to bring a cushion with you!

Last night it was an evening out at Bath’s Theatre Royal to join a sell-out crowd enjoying the BalletBoyz brand new production Still Pointless, marking the 25th Anniversary of the Company’s critically acclaimed debut.

Ten world-class dancers took us through a selection of some of BalletBoyz’s best moments.

We were eight rows back in the auditorium and enjoying an adequate right-hand side view of the stage.

We chatted while waiting for ‘curtain up’ with two ladies in front of us who had been gifted their seats and had no idea what they were about to watch.

They didn’t return after the interval, so obviously contemporary ballet is not to their taste, but we benefited from a now clear view of the stage, so thank you, ladies!

Forgive me for ending with a criticism of theatre facilities, but you really have got to improve things in the gents. One lock-up is not enough!

Look away now, ladies, but while we are on the subject, your urinals need better shielding. With child protection in mind, such facilities should look and feel safer.

  1. I agree about the toilets, having been accidentally locked in the disabled loo after Bluebeard . Not for long enough to start ordering wallpaper, just a jammed door. But long enough to note a revamp is overdue!
