Lights! Camera! Action!

[Do you remember rocking around the clock with Bill Haley?]

My introduction to the magic of the ‘big screen’ was watching the musical South Pacific in the Bristol Odeon at the age of ten.

Despite the arrival of television and social media, a trip to the cinema is still the best way of sharing an experience with others, and – no matter how big your TV – it still can’t compete with IMAX!

Did you know the first purpose-built cinema in the Bath area was actually in Keynsham, but our city wasn’t far behind in jumping on board the wonder of the projected image – especially with the arrival of sound.

The Museum of Bath at Work is preparing to celebrate 120 years of cinemas and films in Bath with an exhibition called “Lights! Camera!Action!” which opens on Saturday, May 9th, and runs through to Sunday, November 29th.

You’re invited to find out about Bath’s cinemas over time and enjoy some nostalgia. There will be an exhibition book to buy and cinema-themed goodies on sale in the museum shop. There will also be a programme of film screenings and talks.

The exhibition book is the handiwork of Ann Cullis, who, when she is not busy researching cinema history, just happens to be a museum trustee and company secretary.

I invited her around to Wyatt’s Place to tell me more.

What cinema memories do you have? Do let me know.
