You had said you saw Hawthorn blooms from Grosvenor bridge. They are Blackthorn surely? Sloes.
I think you’ll find that’s blackthorn Richard! Hawthorne is also called ‘may’ – a clue to the month in which it blooms. The flowers are bigger and sometimes pink, but I love the blackthorn because it’s first to brighten up the hedgerows . It’s good for making shillelaghs because it’s very hard and walking sticks because the branches are often straight (I have one made by my great grandfather!) and then in autumn it gives us sloes for sloe gin.
