Is it me, or has the central body of the Laura Place fountain turned black? I cannot remember seeing it this so prominently coloured before?

  1. It had been given a glow up. I’m unsure whether it looks better or worse. What is for certain though is that the road surface around it looks horrid. Why is it that places like Bruges spend time and effort laying saviours on their roads whilst ours are lock-marked with excavation fillings.

  2. It certainly looks that way – bit like the the flying buttresses on Bath Abbey which you illustrated yesterday, in your piece on the leaking tower. I’m old enough to remember Bath when most of it was smoke-stained black. Looks like some major cleaning will be on the cards before too much longer, to remove whatever is staining it now (clearly not smoke!).
