Holocaust Memorial Day – 27th January
The images almost seem to fit with the fact that today is Holocaust Memorial Day. Lest we forget, Martin Niemoller’s words just about say it all:
First They Came – Pastor Martin Niemoller [1946]
First they came for the Communists
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Communist
Then they came for the Socialists
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Socialist
Then they came for the trade unionists
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a trade unionist
Then they came for the Jews
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Jew
Then they came for me
And there was no one left
To speak out for me.
Some of us may have more reason than others to mark this day but none of us should forget what it commemorates, in this increasingly volatile world where many of the old certainties are being ‘challenged’ – to say the least.
