I’m hearing two points of view as to when Avon Fire and Rescue Service is going to leave their permanent station and head to the temporary one further down the Lower Bristol Road.

One says by the end of this month, and the other mid-February.

Whichever it is, it won’t be long before demolition begins at that 1930’s Bath HQ.
Meanwhile, speculation grows as to who is going into the old M & S building when the company moves into South Gate and opens on February 4th in the old Debenhams store.

While M & S may be about to move shop, they will leave certain set-in-stone legacies that may or may not remain.

While I was passing that way, I was a little saddened to see some acknowledgement of the area’s medieval past looking the worse for wear. Wouldn’t take long to clean them up, would it?

If we had a cabinet member specifically charged with Heritage, such matters might receive more attention.

I have noted before how the inner city’s public spaces are looking a little uncared for.

Hi Richard,
I remember when the new M&S and Woolworth store was built ( always built side by side whenever possible, maximised footfall for both shops). They were always built at that time by Bovis. Fishy Evans was just behind in a new posh building – as opposed to the one room galley before. Of course the bombed out church was just by as was the glass shop, where my Dad got replacement panes for the ones my brother and broke!
I worked at the North West London Meat Co (opposite in Lower Borough Wall, from 13 on weekends but at age 15 – I got a Saturday Job at “Woolies”.
I remember helping to take damaged stock out of the basement of M&S (lots of pyjamas I recall) when we had the big flood – picture of swans in the road 50 yards below M&S.
So long ago – where did all these years go 🤣. 🤣
so a new era for M&S in Southgate I wonder if they will be there as long??
