Visit Bath recommends Jane Austen fans who want to follow in her footsteps:
“Begin at Gravel Walk, the Lover’s Lane of Jane Austen’s day and the setting for a touching love scene in Persuasion.
As you stroll along Gravel Walk, look out for the discreet door into the Georgian Garden, which has been sympathetically restored to how it would have appeared in Jane Austen’s time. “
I don’t recommend that at the moment. You won’t find much gravel and stick to the tarmac path as elsewhere is pretty mucky!
The state of the Gravel Walk has been a disgrace for a long time now. I had hoped that in this special ‘Jane Austen year’ something would have been done. That said I’m not sure whose responsibility it is: from time to time some gravel appears at the back of a single house. Come on Council – sort it out!
