Victorian Jewel Box

A two-hour drive up the M5 to visit friends in Wolverhampton for the weekend, and a visit to Wightwick Manor – a Victorian house commissioned in 1887 from the architect Edward Ould by Theaodroe Mander of Mander Brothers, a local and successful paint and varnish manufacturer.

It’s a significant example of a domestic building constructed, decorated and furnished under the influence of the Aesthetic and Arts and Crafts movements.

It’s full of the works of William Morris – including wall hangings, wallpapers and upholstery. It also contains Pre-Raphaelite works of art.

The house and grounds were given to the National Trust in 1937 and are open to the public. However, descendants of the Manders family continue to use a private apartment.

The lady who embroidered this bedspread took 26 years to do it!

The manor has been Grade 1 listed on the National Heritage List for England since 1950.
