If you have no idea of its history, you would pass by this bramble patch without noticing that there is an art installation buried within it.
Hidden amidst these overgrown trees and bushes is a wind mobile sculpture called Nails.
It was commissioned from artist Peter Logan, back in 1987, by Sainsbury’s Homebase.
The store has long gone, and planning permission has been given for residential accommodation on the site.
Will the developers take charge of clearing this area and incorporating it within their scheme?
Or could it be moved to somewhere more accessible to everyone, like Victoria Park, Sydney or Parade Gardens?
I remember the sculpture it was really attractive and always gently moving. What a good idea to move it to another public site.
A Peter Logan artwork is worth keeping.
Driving back from Stansted Airport late last night, I saw a very similar sculpture by the open-air car park and immediately thought of Bath’s, then I read your article today. It is indeed a sister piece by the same artist. Maybe it should be mentioned that Stansted appear to be taking better care of theirs. https://artuk.org/discover/artworks/stansted-javelins-304241
