What future for Ralph Allen’s Town House?

It’s good to know l am not alone in trying to keep an eye on things in Bath.

David Stubbs – author, local historian, archaeologist and Mayor’s Guide – spotted something of interest amongst the B&NES publications on the internet.

The disposal of Ralph Allen’s Town House – a Grade 1 listed and historic building – on a long lease.

The decision to ‘market and dispose of the asset on a long leasehold basis’ because ‘the property is surplus to B&NES Corporate Estate and Service Departments.’

When he pointed this out to me, l sent an email to B&NES asking for comment.

This is the reply l have received.

Councillor Paul Roper, cabinet member for Economic and Cultural Sustainable Development, said: “Ralph Allen’s Town House, until 2019, was let on a commercial lease to a firm of Bath-based estate agents. The property has been vacant since this time despite considerable efforts to identify alternative uses, and is surplus to the property requirements of the council.

To admire this fine facade, just pop into Toppings, as you can go through the bookstore and out into a yard to view it. Buy a book while you are there!!

“To protect and enhance the building and safeguard its future, it is important that it is occupied and maintained, and this is best achieved by the marketing and granting of a long leasehold interest to an owner/occupier.

Notable parties, including World Heritage, the Bath Preservation Trust, the National Trust and the Georgian Group, have been consulted about the disposal. Appropriate leasehold restrictions allow the integrity and significance of the Grade I listed historic building to be preserved.”
