The through-traffic restriction trial on Sydney Road, Bath, will be made permanent, B&NES has confirmed.
This decision follows a formal Traffic Regulation Order (TRO) consultation held in July alongside a detailed review of the most recent traffic and air quality data.
The restriction, implemented in April 2024, under an Experimental Traffic Regulation Order (ETRO), consists of a row of bollards at the junction of Sydney Road and New Sydney Place. It was introduced as part of the council’s Liveable Neighbourhoods programme, which aims to reduce traffic in residential areas and create safer, quieter routes for walking and cycling.
Following six months of monitoring and community feedback, the council decided to make a permanent TRO, which replaced the ETRO, and that permanent TRO will become operative on 1st October 2025.
Councillor Joel Hirst, Cabinet Member for Sustainable Transport Strategy, said: “I want to thank everyone who has taken part in the many consultations on this scheme. For anyone who wants to find the full consultation outcomes and monitoring data, you can find it on our website.”
The decision to make the restriction permanent, along with the full consultation outcomes and monitoring data, is available on the council website.

EDITOR As a cyclist who enjoys using this now permanently-restricted road, can l ask for it to be resurfaced? The whole stretch going downhill is unsafe for two-wheelers with ruts and potholes throughout.
Oh, what a surprise!
Good news. And the only logical choice.
How surprising! Closure of a stretch of road which runs above a railway line & canal !
Now causing daily havoc, pollution, noise and constant traffic jams for hundreds of residents. Overwhelmingly objected to by a vast majority, ignored for the benefit of a minority.. That’s democracy in action, if ever.
What is Bath coming to ?
