[The red line shows the Wansdyke in Odd Down]
Maybe we’ve all heard of Hadrian’s Wall. However, just a few years after the Romans had gone, here in the West Country, men laboured to construct another defensive system. One that stretches for 35 miles from Bristol to Marlborough.
The Wansdyke – as it is known – passes through our area, and if you want to know more, you’d do as well to read on!
Julianne Mackrell tells me:
“Come and listen to some thoughts on the Wansdyke (from Woden’s Dyke), a series of early medieval defensive linear earthworks in the West Country of England, consisting of a ditch and a running embankment from the ditch spoil, with the ditching facing north and running right through Odd Down!
Some say it should have the importance of Hadrian’s Wall!
All of Odd Down History / Family History Research events are free to attend; all we ask if that you purchase a drink to support the venue hosting us, please.
