Oh, lucky me! A sneak peek this morning at the new basement galleries in Bath’s Holburne Museum.

The only time you ever went downstairs in this repository of all things beautiful was to visit the loo, but from Wednesday, September 10th, you too can explore the amazingly opulent space that’s been created to house the Schroder Collection.

It’s an Aladdin’s Cave of silverware, paintings, bronzes and maiolica from the Renaissance period.
While you are down at this lower level, you’ll find another smaller gallery housing more gems from the museum’s permanent collection.

Upstairs, on the first floor, yet another space has been created to house Dutch works of art and one work by French artist Claude Lorrain.

The new galleries tie in with a new logo for the Holburne and – with more to see – an increase in the entry fee.

I had a conversation with Sophie Woodward, the museum’s communications and development head. Sorry about the wind noise on our microphones.
