A night at the galleries

An hour after my husband returned from a trip abroad, we headed into town with invites to two different art gallery previews.

First stop was the Victoria Art Gallery to view this summer’s magical new exhibition, The Lost Spells: Listening to a Landscape of Voices, which showcases artworks by Jackie Morris and poems by Robert Macfarlane from their best-selling book celebrating nature, ‘The Lost Spells’.

Featuring over 100 exquisite illustrations – with accompanying spell poems – this is an incredible exploration of the natural world, and there’s plenty of hands-on activity too for all members of the family.

Everything from crawling through a scaled-up badger sett to adding your own leaf to a custom-made storytelling tree.

There are lots of family activities planned around the exhibition during the school holidays, and to book, click on victoriagal.org.uk for more information.

Do watch an interview l did with artist Jackie Morris – elsewhere on this blog!!

Then off into Milsom Street for our second preview invitation of the night.

Curator and gallery owner Sandra Higgins describes her latest exhibition as a movable feast. It’s called Summer Fayre and features 20 artists in a showcase of diverse artistic expressions.

Just like at an art fayre, where works are sold, the buyer can take them away, and the artist can fill the space with another work.

The gallery is in Milsom Place – just off Milsom Street – and that’s where l caught up with Sandra last night – during a private preview.
