Why the closure? Update!

If you are wondering why Bath Street – one of the city’s ‘photo opportunity’ stops – is coned off with notices saying closed until October, then this is what l have heard.

2022

Remember, during the revamp of the old laundry by the Roman Baths – and the creation of the Clore Learning Centre – they had to strengthen the supports of the vaults under York Street?

It appears that there could be a similar issue here.

Councillor Paul Roper, Cabinet Member for Economic and Cultural Sustainable Development, told Bath Newseum: “We have installed pedestrian barriers as a precaution while investigative and remedial work is undertaken by contractors in the vault below.

We don’t know how long the work will take. It is being carried out below ground, so people won’t see a lot of activity, such as the road being dug up. Safety is our main priority, and we apologise for any inconvenience the closure may cause.”

  1. Always find The New Bridge a little scary to cross over as a pedestrian. Path quite narrow, as are the actual traffic lanes, so heavy vehicles pass very close to you. Hopefully nobody injured in this incident.

A separate dedicated light foot bridge close by would be very welcome.
