Over to Widcombe Social Club last night for the second of Music Director, Matt Finch’s Musical Theatre Cabarets featuring some of the ‘finest musical theatre singers in Bath’ – it said on the programme.

Matt is experimenting with an idea that has already proved a big hit in Bristol, where – under the title of ‘Secret Cabaret’ – a group of local singers have been delivering a selection of songs from the shows for many years.

Matt is doing three more at the Widcombe venue – April 27th, June 1st and July 13th. For more information go to www.finchmusic.co.uk/events

I have to say the overall performance was an improvement on the first show – even if there were a couple of false starts with individual numbers. We are only human.

What is better is that the singers seem more relaxed and able to give a proper introduction to what they are about to sing. Not all the numbers – and the musicals from which they come – are that well known and it is important to set the scene for what the audience is about to hear.

Congratulations to Luke Emmett for setting the mood with lighting and sound. If l can be slightly critical l have to say the ladies certainly had the edge when it came to how they dressed.
It’s meant to be an intimate, nightclub atmosphere and we want our stars spangled!

Also – as a lot of the singers are or have been members of Bath Light Opera Group – it’s great so many family and friends come to support them.
However, for this idea to grow it’s got to break out and appeal to a wider Bath audience. Take it from me, it’s a £15 well spent!

I leave you with an excerpt from an A cappella version of ‘For Good’ from the musical Wicked – in which Matt joined in too!
