Towpath troubles

The Kennet and Avon Canal towpath lives on as a fresh-air access way for walkers and cyclists in and around Bath, but one section seems often impassable.

Bill Keeling writes:

“For the past week, this is the impassable state of the towpath from Bathwick Hill to Widcombe, the most direct route for residents to the station and much loved by visitors to Bath.

It really is time for basic remedial work to be conducted. It’s been in steady deterioration for 10 years with no one taking responsibility for its proper upkeep.”

Bill, I have passed your remarks on to the Canal and River Trust for comment. Thank you for the images.

  1. It might be one of those situations where the council says it’s the responsibility of the canal trust and vice versa. I hope it doesn’t involve an expensive legal case to sort it out.

  2. I often walk along the river towpath from Twerton into Bath and it’s the same story – really tricky navigating around those puddles!

  3. It’s exactly the same all the way to Bradford on Avon, walked it the other day, puddles and waterlogged sides all the way.
