At your convenience

I recently heard from Nigel and Karen Morris who are avid followers of my blog – though they live in South Africa for much of the year.

They emailed: ‘Going through old scrapbooks and pictures yesterday, we came across this newspaper article from 2009.

I thought it may interest you as we have something almost identical on the corner of Pulteney Road and North Parade Road.

I know this article refers to Sea Mills in Bristol and I don’t know whether the plans materialised, but we can surely do something with the miserable state of our building.

We were born and bred in Bath but have lived in South Africa for 40 years so it’s difficult to take a picture of our Bath loo right now .

It is on the corner of North Parade Road and Pulteney Road by the railway bridge.

Your influence in the beautification of Bath is invaluable. Well done. “

Thanks guys. I walked down this morning and got a picture of the public convenience you refer to.

Of course, it’s a great idea to consider giving these abandoned sites a new lease of life as something else, but there will be many saying they should be re-opened as the city is short of such public facilities.

The subject is still a hot potato around these parts.

My friend Richard Lucking has updated us all on what happened over in Sea Mills.

As this still from Google Maps shows the toilets were demolished and replaced with a house!

Richard also reminds me that public loos at Widcome also made way for business offices.

  1. Toilets of Bath closed by the LibDems. I recently toured the City and took photos of several closed toilets and the site of those closed for illicit reasons. I published my result on Facebook and received many comments on the lack of toilet facilities around a tourist City.

  2. Planning permission was granted by the council to replace this with an artists studio in 2015. The scheme was never implemented though.

  3. I always thought it would make a nice little HQ for Bath Comedy Festival, of which I am an honorary patron. After all, quite a few of our visiting artistes deliver a nice line in toilet humour! It wouldn’t cost much to convert. Any potential sponsors feeling flush ?
