Hot on the heels of plans to rebuild our fire station, a planning application to start work on the city’s new police station has been submitted.
I interviewed the former Police and Crime Commissioner for Avon and Somerset Police, Mark Shelford outside the old 1960’s office block earmarked for conversion back in February of this year.
It’s Plymouth House in Monmouth Street.
According to the Heritage Statement attached to the application:
‘The Site comprises a four-storey 1960s building, originally constructed as part of
the first phase of the Kingsmead Telephone Exchange. It is a large modern
structure, faced in bathstone with rows of horizontal windows and a flat roof.
Now vacant, it was most recently in office use.‘
In brief, what they want to do : ‘The aim of the proposals is to refurbish Plymouth House to facilitate the creation of a central policing hub to meet the current and future needs of the Avon and Somerset Police.
The majority of the proposed works consist of internal refurbishment and upgrades
proposed to the exterior, in order to enhance the sustainability of the new facility and
provide a secure environment for employees and other visitors.
This would include weatherproofing the external stair leading to the carpark to improve visual impact and ensure safer egress in emergencies.‘
