Collision closes Thermae Spa

Oh dear! Not much Christmas cheer at the city’s Thermae Bath Spa this morning where a vehicle has apparently collided with a column – forming part of the facility’s colonnade entrance.

I understand a large lorry – delivering chemicals – was trying to reverse at the time. Not an easy task l am sure as the complex is surrounded by Christmas market chalets.

It’s caused a temporary closure of the facility and it is obviously the case the column has been knocked out of true.

How dangerous the situation is – and when the Thermae Bath Spa opens again – remains to be seen, but l will try and get a statement from B&NES.

I checked with the facility website and this is the notice they are showing online.

Just seen this statement: ‘This morning at 7:30am a delivery lorry unexpectedly reversed into one of the 18th-century columns, being one of the six columns supporting the colonnade to the entrance of Thermae Bath Spa.

The safety of our customers and our staff is our first priority and therefore, regrettably, we have taken the decision to close whilst structural engineers and experts assess the damage to the column and advise when we can reopen.
