The city of Bath was granted the right to elect a Mayor by Richard the First, back in 1189, and Cllr Michelle O’Doherty is currently the 797th person to hold that role.

The office – now ceremonial – has a long and fascinating history which forms the subject of a talk – at Bath’s Royal literary and Scientific Institution on Tuesday next – by Mayor’s Officer, Anthony Martin.

He’s a man with an in-depth knowledge of the ancient charters and privileges of the city and how the role of the mayor has evolved over time.
