Sad to see the City of Bath Arms flying at half mast today above the Guildhall.

It’s a mark of respect following the death of Rob Appleyard – a former Bath and North East Somerset councillor for Lambridge, Council Chair and recent Mayor of Bath.

Following his year in office, he was made an Honorary Alderman of the city. Altogether, Rob had given 16 years of civic service.

I have my own memories of Rob and his lovely wife Amanda who my husband and l counted as friends.
During his year of office there was one musical event he was attending at St Michaels Without that the Mayoress was unable to attend.
Rob let me stand in for Amanda – though without the chain of course!
I got a ride in the Mayor’s car and a gentle reminder from his Worship that – when we arrive – he has to step out of the vehicle first!

Rob, who was 72, is survived by his wife Amanda and his four children and grand children.
He passed away peacefully at the Dorothy House Hospice in Wiltshire which, in going to see him, l was visiting for the first time.

What a facility, and what wonderful people who work there at Winsley near Bradford on Avon!
The hospice provides palliative and end of life care for people across a 800 square mile catchment area covering B&NES and parts of Wiltshire and Somerset.
I know Amanda and Rob’s family are full of praise for the way he was cared for and anxious to continue to support the hospice in its mission of care.

There will be a collection for Dorothy House during Rob’s Celebration – a gathering at Bath Abbey at 2 pm on Wednesday, November 13th to celebrate Rob’s life.
The family say the event is open to all and please – no black ties, but plenty of bright colours!
Those who cannot attend can find out more about how to make a donation to Dorothy House via https://www.dorothyhouse.org.uk/support-us/donate/
This story – with its photos – has the approval of Amanda Appleyard to whom l send – along with the family – my heartfelt condolences.
He was a truly wonderful man.
I enjoyed being his Mayor’s Officer and also being a Mayor’s Honorary Guide for the last
35 years.
Rob was a pleasure to work with & always put people at ease when he met them. This made him a great Mayor & ambassador for the City of Bath. Very sad to hear this news & condolences to Amanda & family.
Such a lovely man with a huge smile. He will be missed greatly
