We may have lived in Bath for fifteen years now, but we still have many friends back in Bristol – where l worked and lived for thirty five years.
Two of them – Peter and Tim – invited us to visit the city and spend an evening with them – and many others – enjoying a musical treat called The Secret Cabaret.
The venue was the old floating restaurant called The Glass Boat – now owned and re-imagined by the Six O’clock Gin Company.
So, after two fine dishes of tofu and noddles at Pho in Clare Street, we headed up to where the boat is permanently moored – just across the river from Bristol Bridge.
What a setting it turned out to be for enjoying the vocal talents of a group of six accomplished singers, who also oozed personality – accompanied on electronic keyboard by Musical Director, Claire Alsop.
In no particular order, our entertainers were: Emma Griffiths, Charlie Morris, Amanda Board, Sam Board, Jane Williams and Toby Brewer.
Together they showcased a selection of songs from some of the best musicals to grace stage and screen – delivered in two varied ‘acts’ that we got to savour from ‘ring-side’ seats!
The original credit for this intimate, first-class and polished entertainment goes to founder and producer Angus Blance.
The first cabaret venue – back in 2017 – was the Piano Bar at the Bristol Hippodrome.
Since then performances have been staged at various venues, but last night’s show was the first to be held on the Glass Boat.
Hopefully, it won’t be the last as it would be a marvellous setting for the next late-night Secret Cabaret which will be organised as a Christmas special!
Can we have something like this in Bath please? It would save having to wait forty minutes for a train home.
Having said that – the wait was worth it, in exchange for a superb evening’s entertainment.
